Since the passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968, municipalities and public housing authorities that receive federal funding for housing and community development have had an obligation to expand access to opportunity by both tackling segregation and investing in communities that have been left behind. This provision of the law – known as Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) – recognizes that where you live determines the opportunities you have access to, including education, employment, transportation, health care and much more. Join us for a short introduction to fair housing and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development/(HUD)’s new rule on AFFH, including some of the history and purpose of the AFFH requirement as well as the key features and new requirements of the final AFFH rule.
Speakers: Nancy Haynes (Executive Director) and Liz Keegan (Director of Education & Outreach) for the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan.
